Season 33 Jeopardy! contestants by media market

Some interesting things that I noted:

• Of 256 media markets (210 in the United States and 46 in Canada), 95 (37.1%) had at least one player appear on the show during the season.
• The ten largest American markets produced half the competitors [222/445 (49.9%) overall, 201/400 (50.3%) regular play]. Those ten markets accounted for 29.8% of all U.S. television-viewing households in 2016-17.
• Fully one third of the Teen Tournament field was from the New York metropolitan area - but none from the five boroughs (two from Fairfield County, CT, two from Long Island, and one from northern New Jersey). Those players were fully separated in their quarterfinal games.
• On five occasions, both challengers were from the same media market - September 29 (Washington), October 4 (New York), October 12 (Washington), June 23 (Washington), and June 26 (Salt Lake City).
• The largest market to not produce a player was Kansas City (ranked no. 33). The largest not to have a regular-play contestant was Tampa-St. Petersburg (no. 11).

Two notes:

1. The players in the College Championship were credited to the town they were introduced as being from, not the location of the institution they represented.
2. The figures do not include Courtney Paulson, winner of the last game of Season 32.
